What to Expect During a Standard Residential Underground Tank Removal

Underground Storage Tank Removal (UST)

Homeowners and commercial building owners alike are taking preventive measures and having underground storage tanks removed before they become a problem. Applied's personnel have experience in over 12,000 storage tank removals in more than 250 towns in New Jersey. On the average, we remove approximately 500 tanks per year. The key to our success has always been experience and customer service. We visit each site, and take the time to explain the entire process from start to finish. We handle the permitting process and coordinate all inspections. Our staff is OSHA-trained and certified by the NJDEP for the closure of underground tank systems. These certifications give our clients the added peace of mind they need to know the project will be handled properly from start to finish by experienced professionals.

In New Jersey, underground storage tank removal is divided into 2 categories; Regulated & Non-Regulated.

Non-Regulated Underground Tanks are:

  • Residential heating oil tanks OF ANY SIZE. (For instance, even a 10,000-gallon underground heating oil tank for an apartment building would be considered non-regulated).
  • Motor Fuel for agricultural use, up to 1,100 gallons
  • Residential underground tanks storing motor fuel for non-commercial use, up to 1,100 gallons.
  • Tanks situated in an underground area including, but not limited to, basements, cellars, mines, drift shafts, or tunnels, if the storage tank is situated upon or above the surface of the floor.

Non-regulated tank require only a local Building Department permit, and inspection by the local building authorities.

No sampling is required, as long as the local building inspector agrees there is no leakage from the tank. There is no involvement with the NJDEP as long as the there is no leakage from the tank.
