While living in Dover, NJ, Al enlisted in the United States Coast Guard on August 23, 1946. He was first stationed at the St. George Coast Guard Station in Staten Island, NY. From there, Al was assigned to the Sandy Hook Coast Guard Station.

After completing a course for Electronics Technician (ET), Al became responsible for the installation, maintenance, repair and management of sophisticated electronic equipment. Upon completion of the ET assignment, he furthered his studies by graduating 2nd in his class in LORAN (Long Range Navigation) training.

Operating LORAN was one of the more obscure missions ever undertaken by the Coast Guard. It was a radio-based navigation system first established during World War II under a secret program to provide the Allies with a reliable and accurate means of navigation at sea in any weather. From there, Al was assigned to Okinawa, Japan, where he spent 1-1/2 years monitoring and maintaining LORAN equipment for aircraft and naval vessels. He was honorably discharged on August 23rd, 1949.

We are proud to have Mr. Riss as our customer. We appreciate his service and we honor him for a job well done!
